Lyons Township Teacher Warned
The school board gave a teacher notice for "unprofessional and unacceptable" conduct.
LA GRANGE, IL — The Lyons Township High School District 204 board issued a "notice to remedy" to one of the high school's teachers at its meeting last month. It was given to Greg Elwood, a teacher in the applied technology department.
According to the board's notice, the warning was issued because of "your unprofessional and unacceptable conduct." If Elwood repeats such conduct or fails to comply with directives, the district will take further action, including suspension without pay or dismissal as a tenured teacher, the notice said. Elwood's conduct was described in a memo by the district's superintendent, Tim Kilrea, according to the notice.
Patch obtained the documents through a public records request, but the records did not include Kilrea's memo, which Patch has now requested specifically. A chain of emails between Elwood and the human resources director indicates the district took issue with "an interaction" Elwood had with another member of the applied technology department on Dec. 12.

Ed Piotrowski, the district's human resources director, emailed Elwood five days ahead of the Jan. 21 school board meeting about the administration's plan to recommend a notice to remedy. He said the teacher could take part in the closed session on the matter.
In his response, Elwood said he would not attend, telling the human resources director to "be safe this weekend traveling and have a great day today."

According to the emails, Elwood had at least one meeting with Piotrowski and an administrator about the issue. He was allowed to bring representation.
Elwood teaches furniture and cabinet making and home maintenance and repair. He made $134,000 in 2018, according to OpenTheBooks.com.
Elwood did not return a message for comment.
