When the Brookfield man tried unsuccessfully to shoot himself, Summit police said he shot out his windshield instead.

SUMMIT, IL -- A Brookfield man was arrested after he shot off a gun in a truck repair parking lot, prosecutors said. Frank Corduan, 55, appeared before Cook County Judge Peter Felice on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

Around 11 a.m. Sept. 3, Corduan went to Wes Truck and Trailer Repair at 7801 W. 60th St. in Summit. The prosecutor said Corduan tried to shoot himself unsuccessfully, so he shot out the windshield of his car instead. Police found five shell casings in the parking lot and one that had gone through the business’s window. Later that day, Corduan’s girflfriend called Brookfield Police and expressed concern that her boyfriend might try to kill himself. Summit police officers recovered a 25-caliber Raven Arms handgun, that was registered to his girlfriend.

Corduan has prior felonies in 1988 for criminal sexual assault and home invasion and was sentenced to 28 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, the prosecutor said. He is also a registered sex offender. Corduan was also charged in 2010 for allegedly torching an apartment building in Forest Park, according to news reports. The extra-alarm fire destroyed the building.
