LA GRANGE, IL – The Park District of La Grange is seeking state money to help pay for $1.2 million in improvements to Waiola Park, which is at Waiola Avenue and 47th Street.

Some neighbors are opposed to the proposed changes, according to district records.

On Monday, the park board approved applying for money from the state Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development program. Such a grant could cover up to half the costs.

According to district documents, the money would pay for, among other things, playground and fitness equipment, playground turf, paving for courts, drainage and site clearing. The records on the district's website are unclear about specifics.

At a July 10 park board meeting, a number of neighbors spoke out against the proposed changes.

Brainard Avenue resident Bob Sherman said he was concerned the changes would result in a loss of needed green space in the middle of the park and adjustments to the walking path. The changes, he said, did not reflect community input.

Stone Avenue resident Caitlin Harrington said the park was beautiful as it is, although she said she supported upgraded playground equipment, according to the meeting minutes. And another resident on the street, Rose Naseef, said the current park is ideal with soccer, green space and a safe path.
