St. Cletus School Hosts Erin Potts Invitational Volleyball Tournament

Erin Potts Invitational Volleyball Tournament

Over the past weekend, St. Cletus School in LaGrange hosted the 6th Annual Erin Potts Invitational Volleyball Tournament. This annual tournament is held in memory of Erin Potts, a 2005 graduate of St Cletus School. Erin played volleyball for St. Cletus School, Lyons Township High School, and Lions/1st Alliance Volleyball Club. At the age of fifteen, Erin was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. She passed away on December 18, 2009 at the age of eighteen.

From Friday, January 30 through Sunday, February 1, local seventh and eighth grade teams competed in this action-packed community effort. Local teams competing included St. Cletus School, St. Francis Xavier School, and McClure Junior High. The event also included an alumni game on January 31, during which all St. Cletus School alumni were invited to play.

While proceeds from this year’s tournament are not yet fully calculated, last year, the tournament raised $9,600 for Scatter Kindness, a fund Erin’s family created in her memory through the Adventist Hinsdale Hospital Foundation. Proceeds from the tournament, as well as personal donations, directly support cancer patients through patient experience programs. The Potts family created this fund to help meet patients’ emotional needs as they find their way through the challenges that accompany the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
