La Grange Staff Size Drops Over Last Decade

The biggest decrease in employees was in the police department. The fire and public works departments also saw reductions.

LA GRANGE, IL – The size of the La Grange village government's staff has dropped by 11 percent over the last decade, according to the village's annual audit.

Released Thursday, the audit shows the village has the equivalent of 88 full-time employees, down from 99 in 2014.

Much of that decrease is attributed to the police department. Now, the department has 30 officers, compared with 35 a decade ago.

Recruitment has been especially difficult for many police agencies since 2020.

But La Grange saw its officer number fall to 29 in 2017, from 35 a year earlier, according to the audit. It stayed at that number for four years. It increased to 30 in 2022.

The fire department's head count stood at 19 this year, down from 21 in 2014.

The number of public works employees is now a dozen, down from 14 a decade ago.

The administration, water and sewer departments each reported the same number of employees over the last 10 years.

The finance department has employed four people since 2020. Before that, it had five.

Community development has five employees, down from six in 2014.

Patch sent an inquiry to the village late Thursday afternoon about the smaller staff.
