Stop Signs Sought At La Grange Intersection

Drivers are going "superfast" down the street, so children and others would benefit from signs, a resident said.

LA GRANGE, IL – A La Grange resident on Monday requested the village put up stop signs on Edgewood Avenue at Arlington Avenue.

The T-intersection has a stop sign at Arlington, but not on Edgewood.

At a Village Board meeting, resident Ryan Banks, who lives at the corner, said a lot of younger families, including his, live nearby.

"We benefit from a stop to slow down the traffic," Banks said. "The cars are going superfast. It's not 30, 35. Sometimes, it appears they are going 40 or, dare I say, 50 mph, flying up Edgewood."

Stop signs could also help bicyclists, he said.

Banks also said an apartment building proposed for Hillgrove and Brainard avenues could increase traffic in the neighborhood.

In response, Village President Mark Kuchler said he appreciated Banks bringing up the matter to the board. He said he was sure village officials could look into the protocols for stop signs.

In another matter, Joseph Zarlenga, who lives in the 700 block of South La Grange Road, asked the village to consider repaving the alley in his block on the east side of the street.

"I've lived there since 2006, and it's been a known issue that it's dilapidated and it won't drain water," Zarlenga said.

Kuchler said the village could look into it.

In June 2023, a caregiver for a resident told the Village Board that she had been trying to get the village to repair that same stretch of alley for a few months.

A day after she spoke to the board, caregiver Mary O'Dowd told Patch, "Great news: Workers were out repairing the alley this morning! ... (T)hanks, Village of LaGrange for doing the right thing."
