Summit Behind Neighbors On Audits, Receives Delinquent Notice

SUMMIT, IL – West suburban Summit has failed to complete an audit of its books for years.

It is behind its neighbors.

More than two weeks ago, Patch left a message for comment with Chris Crisanti, who is listed on the village's website as handling public relations. He has not returned the message.

Every town must turn in an annual audit to the state comptroller's office. Depending on timing, the agency posts online the audits for the last two or three budget years.

Through a public records request, Patch asked Summit for its most recent audit. The village provided the one for the budget year ending Dec. 31, 2023.

All the neighboring towns have more up-to-date audits posted on the comptroller's website. They consist of McCook, Lyons, Bridgeview, Bedford Park, Forest View, Countryside, Riverside, Hodgkins and La Grange.

The most recent audits posted on Summit's website were from 2006 to 2013. The village apparently dropped the practice of posting them online.

In response to an inquiry, Kimberly Howard, a comptroller's office spokesperson, said her agency sent a delinquent notice for the 2024 audit in August 2025 and communicated by phone.

"We try to work with local governments to help get the required reports finished and submitted to the (comptroller's office)," Howard said in an email. "Extensions, notices, and reach-outs by phone and email are part of our policy to follow statute and perform our due diligence in collecting the required reports."

In the spring, neighboring Lyons had not submitted any audits for budget years going back to 2023. At that point, a comptroller's official said her agency was planning to force an audit on the village.

After Patch's story in early April, Lyons finished its 2023 and 2024 audits.

La Grange, which has long prided itself on its finances, was later than usual with the audit for the last budget year. It finished its latest audit about 10 months after the budget year ended.

Officials pointed to a shorthanded finance department.
