Person Of Interest In Custody From Mall Shooting: Cops

A 42-year-old woman was killed in a shooting at North Riverside Mall and her teenage daughter was injured.

NORTH RIVERSIDE, IL — A 42-year-old woman was killed during a shooting at North Riverside mall Saturday. Maria Ruiz, 42, was killed during the shooting at 5:46 p.m. Jan. 13. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, Ruiz's cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.

Police have now said there is a person of interest in custody. According to police, the Chicago Police Department contacted North Riverside and said they had the person in custody. With the assistance of the West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force and the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, the department will be seeking formal charges.

According to North Riverside Police, investigators believe this was an isolated domestic-related incident. Police said the male suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival.

NBC reported the shooting took place in a southwest parking lot of the mall. According to NBC, bullet holes could be seen in the car where the shooting took place.

Ruiz's 14-year-old daughter was also injured in the shooting. Police said she suffered non-life-threatening wounds.

Ruiz's 19-year-old son, Jose, set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral and memorial expenses. According to the GoFundMe, Jose's sister was shot and has a wounded arm. Maria was shot in the head and killed. Besides his sister, Jose also has a nine-year-old brother.
