RIVERSIDE, IL — A Riverside officer who was on a traffic stop early Sunday morning heard what sounded like a crash close by on Harlem Avenue. As the officer approached the source of the sound, he saw a car with front-end damage speed past him, according to a Riverside police report.

The officer stopped the car shortly afterward. He found the car had struck the metal retaining bar that protects the gas pumps at the Amstar service station, 3416 S. Harlem. The driver was identified as Roxanne M. White, 35, of Chicago.

According to the report, the officer could smell a strong odor of alcohol on the woman, even through his N95 face mask. White was asked to do roadside field testing, which she failed, police said.

She was then arrested. On the way to central lockup, White got sick in the squad car, prompting the police to hire a professional cleaning service, according to the report.

Once in custody, White declined to take a breath test, telling officers, "I have a lawyer from my last DUI arrest, and he told me not to blow."

The police department said it would send a bill for cleaning the squad car. It plans to ask a judge to include that amount in any fines associated with a conviction.

White was charged with DUI, hit-and-run property damage and several other traffic violations.
