Women Steal Belongings At La Grange Gym: Cops

They acted as if they were interested in a class, but committed theft when an employee left, police said.

LA GRANGE, IL – A month ago, two women pretending to be interested in a fitness class at a La Grange gym stole the phone and a debit card of a class participant, local police said.

Late last week, Patch obtained the police report through a public records request. The police department has not included the theft in its weekly crime reports to the media.

About 10 a.m. March 18, the suspects entered Form Barre and Fitness, 118 Calendar Ave., and acted as if they were signing in on an iPad used for checking into classes, according to the report.

When asked, they said they were interested in the class that was going on. An employee took the pair into the room where participants put their belongings into cubbies.

One of the women asked to use the restroom. The employee stayed with the other for a time before telling her to come in when they were ready, police said. That's when the theft was believed to have occurred.

When the employee did not see the women come into the class, she went back to the room with the cubbies. The woman who went to the restroom said she didn't feel well, so they left, police said.

One of the participants told police that she found her iPhone missing when she left the class at 10:30 a.m., police said. Not long after, her husband told her that a charge of $6,000 appeared on a debit card.

The participant went to her bank and as she opened her wallet, discovered her Chase Bank debit card was gone, police said. The bank reported about $10,000 in fraudulent charges. The charges were at places such as the Apple Store, Walgreens and Alo, a clothing store.

Police were able to get video at one of the stores. Two women were seen in the footage, but it was hard to make out their faces, police said.

The women at the gym were described as white or possibly Hispanic and unable to speak English well.

One had dark hair with possible highlights, was carrying a dark purse with pink outlines, possibly the Louis Vuitton brand, and was wearing a dark coat with a white zip-up jacket underneath and a white baseball cap, police said.

The other woman was wearing a white puffy coat with a white baseball cap that was similar to the other woman's, police said. She appeared to have her hair tucked inside the cap.
