60-Year Old Time Capsule Opened By Lake Forest Students

School of St. Mary students are now voting on what to put in the schools next time capsule.

LAKE FOREST, IL — Sixty years ago, students at the School of St. Mary in Lake Forest put a series of items into a metal box, which was placed into a cornerstone of a new addition. Last week, that box was removed and opened in front of an assembly of students, teachers and alumni as one of several events the school has organized to celebrate its 100th anniversary this year, the Lake Forester reported.

On scene for the opening were several dozen St. Mary's graduates who had attended during or soon after the 60-year-old capsule was placed, although none interviewed by Daily North Shore could remember what had been placed put inside.

Among the items recovered from the time capsule:

  • A 1957 Lake Forest-Lake Bluff phone directory.
  • A Church of St. Mary Campaign News fundraising brochure.
  • A business card from a John E. Grouch with a Chicago address.
  • A program from the church's Golden Jubilee celebration.
  • A copy of The New World, a Catholic newspaper of the time, dated Dec. 6, 1957.
  • A copy of the Chicago Tribune dated Dec. 10, 1957.
  • A copy of the Lake Forester dated Nov. 28, 1957.
  • A 1946 dime.
  • A nickel.
  • A penny.

St. Mary's students are voting until June 9 on what they would like to put in the school's next time capsule and where to place it.
