85 High School Girls In WGA's Caddie Academy Tour Lake Forest Police And Fire Departments

LAKE FOREST, IL – Participants in the Western Golf Association’s Caddie Academy visited the Lake Forest Police and Fire Departments as a part of their summer program earlier this month. The 85 participants in the girls’ program toured police and fire facilities, and heard officials share information on public safety.

The day began with Commander Dwight Davis and Detective Andy Shiu speaking about self-defense and awareness. Following a classroom-style chat, safety techniques were demonstrated, which participants were invited to attempt.

Following the physical demonstration, participants listened to a talk on internet and personal safety from Detective Wendy Dumont, Detective Conrad Christensen and Officer Robert Monahan.

The police portion of the day finished with a conversation about policing and general police-related topics. Detective Ben Grum, Officer Paul Daizovi and Officer Adrian Peoples shared how they got their start in the field of police work, and what a day in the life of a police officer is like.

Caddie Academy participants then headed over to the Lake Forest Fire Department, where firefighters demonstrated their equipment, showed off some of the firetrucks and spoke about what a day in the life of a firefighter is like.

The WGA Caddie Academy is in its sixth summer, providing a group of 85 female high school students from across the nation an opportunity to caddie at local golf and country clubs – and ultimately earn a shot at winning a full housing and tuition college scholarship through the Evans Scholars Foundation.

This summer, following the success of its program for girls, the WGA Caddie Academy launched a program for boys. Five high school boys are participating in the inaugural year.

The group typically caddies six days per week, leaving one day for special outings and field trips, like this one to the Lake Forest Police and Fire Departments.
