Acting classes for kids starting Sunday

The Academy @ Citadel Theatre, run by Lake Forest's professional Citadel Theatre Company, is enrolling for Spring Semester Classes

Starting on Sunday, January 18th, acting students will undertake a new semester of fun, challenging, conservatory-style performance classes. Offered to kids ages 6 to 17 (grades 1-12), classes of Citadel’s Academy @ Citadel Theatre (A.C.T.) are offered at the Lake Forest Rec Center and meet once per week from this coming Sunday through end of semester performances in early May. Each of the four performances classes offers students of varying talent and experience roles on stage, learning and rehearsing lines, studying movement and character, and developing the self-confidence and camaraderie necessary to work as part of an ensemble that will perform publicly.

The youngest cohort of A.C.T. students (Grades 1-4) will be performing The Mule Egg. An original adaptation by Citadel’s Andrew Pond of a traditional American Folk tale about a smooth city slicker and the country folk that attempt to bamboozle him.

Student grades 4-9, or of intermediate level acting experience, will take on an adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.

For students who wish to challenge themselves with the added pressures of learning to dance and sing while acting, A.C.T. offers a musical revue performances of the works of Stephen Schwartz. Famous for musicals like Wicked or Pippin, Schwartz’s work has left an indelible mark on the world of theatre and his works are immensely popular with young actors.

Finally, A.C.T’s most advanced students, the Young Ensemble, will rehearse and produce a production of Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors. Learning to speak in prose and verse, students will feel the rhythm of the Bard’s famous meter. With guest appearances from Frank Farrell, a renowned Shakespearian instructor who has also taught at Chicago’s Steppanwolf Theatre, this class has selective admission by audition only.
