Hike Lake County highlights local history (shawlocal.com) — Lake Forest residents can join this year's Hike Lake County program by tackling history-themed routes, including a 1.1-mile trail at Fort Sheridan in Lake Forest, now through November 30. Complete at least seven of 12 designated hikes to earn a bald eagle medallion, with options for families, Spanish-language materials, and dog-friendly routes that even reward your pup with a collar tag.
   

2. Adult male dies after being hit by Metra train on Milwaukee District North line in Lake Forest (lakemchenryscanner.com) — An adult man died early Friday after being struck by an outbound Metra train on the Milwaukee District North line near Waukegan and Old Mill roads in Lake Forest, halting service while police and Metra investigators responded. Local police, fire, and the Lake County Coroner are working to identify the victim and determine what happened, with about 25 passengers shifted to another train.
   

3. Bagpipes & Bonfire returns Sept. 27 for an evening of Scottish tradition, community, and conservation (dailyherald.com) — Lake Forest Open Lands Association is bringing back its popular Bagpipes & Bonfire fundraiser on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 4–7 p.m. at Middlefork Farm Nature Preserve in Lake Forest. Residents can enjoy Scottish bagpipes, Highland athletes, kids' activities, live music, and a dramatic bonfire, while supporting local land conservation and environmental education programs that have already reached tens of thousands of children.
   

4. Victim rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being found in garage fire in Lincolnshire (lakemchenryscanner.com) — Firefighters from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and neighboring departments, including Lake Forest, responded Wednesday to a garage fire on Pembroke Lane in Lincolnshire, where an adult was found seriously injured and rushed to the hospital. Crews quickly contained the blaze to the garage, kept the home habitable, and launched a joint investigation with state and local authorities into what caused the fire.
   

5. Outfits of the Week: Back to School Edition (theforestscout.com) — Lake Forest High School students are kicking off the new year by showing off creative, fashion-forward outfits in the halls, from vintage tees to polished jeans-and-jewelry combos. The student-run Forest Scout highlights several Scouts' looks and invites community support for its Lake Forest-based student journalists through donations that help fund equipment and website costs.
