Northern Illinois Food Bank Recognizes 200K free deliveries to neighbors in Partnership with DoorDash

This Hunger Action Month, Northern Illinois Food Bank is showcasing how home delivery can break down barriers in the fight against hunger.

For many Northern Illinois Food Bank neighbors facing hunger, the hardest part isn't finding help: it's getting to it. Northern Illinois Food Bank is marking more than 200,000 deliveries made directly to the households of neighbors experiencing food insecurity but cannot travel to a distribution site due to barriers such as lack of transportation, disability, stigma, and limited access to grocery stores. This milestone is part of over 150 million meals delivered nationwide by DoorDash's Project DASH.

"Reaching 200,000 deliveries is a milestone that reflects both the growing need in our communities and the power of partnership," said Julie Yurko, President and CEO at Northern Illinois Food Bank. "Through Project DASH, we've been able to bring our My Pantry Express Program directly to neighbors who might otherwise go without, offering them the dignity of choosing their own groceries from home. This partnership with DoorDash has been transformative, and reaching 200,000 deliveries to neighbors experiencing food insecurity is a testament to what's possible when organizations align around a shared mission."

Since 2021, our partnership with Project DASH has helped Northern Illinois Food Bank expand what's possible for neighbors across 13 counties. Together, DoorDash's local delivery network has powered food deliveries those experiencing food insecurity due to transportation, mobility, and scheduling barriers.

"Northern Illinois Food Bank already knows what community members throughout suburban and rural Northern Illinois need, it's just a question of having the capacity to get the food to them," said Daniel Riff, Head of Global Food Access Programs at DoorDash.
