More Than One Million Dollars in Grants Awarded by Lake Forest High School Foundation

Lake Forest, IL — The Lake Forest High School Foundation
awarded its one-millionth dollar in grants this month.

The lucky grant to tip the cumulative total over the
$1,000,000 mark was awarded to Social Studies department chair, Dr. Jim Gantt, for two classroom sets of iPads, preloaded with interactive e-textbooks and
apps.  Approximately 900 students, freshmen through seniors, will be able to use the iPads daily to enhance Social Studies classroom discussions, take notes, and access those notes from home.  The software also is fully
compatible with SMART Boards™, a previous year’s grant.

“The LFHS Foundation is celebrating its 10^th anniversary in 2012, and we are so pleased to have achieved this milestone, thanks to the generosity of our supporters over the past decade,” remarks Lake Forest High School Foundation Chair Jennifer Graham.

A total of 18 grants were awarded for the 2012-2013
school year.  Every core curriculum area —
Math, Science, English, World Language, and Social Studies — received at least one grant.  Grants also were awarded to Art, Music, Applied Technology, and the Library, as well as for professional development.  A Special Education grant was awarded in partnership with the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Learning Disabilities Association, and the LFHS Boosters collaborated on a grant for the Wellness Department.

“Every student, in every grade, at every learning level,
will benefit multiple times each day from these grants,” notes Ellen Marwede, Vice Chair, Grants.  “Grant requests are evaluated based on their fit with the LFHS curriculum, the number of students impacted, the cost/benefit to teachers and students, and the percentage of Foundation dollars previously awarded to that department.”

Other 2012-2013 grants awarded include:

Nook® eReaders and Tablets for student
use in the Library, as well as for English teachers to use in their classrooms
 

Disarticulated human skeletons for the Anatomy & Physiology and Biology classes, allowing for in-depth, accurate study of bone groups 

SMART Document Cameras™ for the Science Department to support the “flipped classroom” concept, which allows students to view lectures at home and spend class time on in-depth clarification and hands-on investigation   

iMac Computers for the Music Department, outfitted with leading-edge musical notation software to help students write their own musical scores and hear the
result

The Music department’s current MacBook laptops will be
refurbished at a minimal cost and put to use in the Library for students to write papers or do research via the Internet — which also will help alleviate the high demand for the current Library PCs stations.

The Lake Forest High School Foundation promotes academic excellence at LFHS by supporting and enhancing educational opportunities with technology, training, and other materials that would not be possible under the
constraints of the district’s budget.
