K4TKS signs off: Earl and Elisabeth Hames welcomed Barbara in Anderson, SC on January 15, 1931. They later moved to Whiteville, NC where Barbara attended public schools. Following marriage to Edward McCormick, a daughter, Terry, and a son, Michael, were born. The young family moved to York County, Virginia in 1960 where she spent 32 years. After Edward’s death in 1984, Barbara married Lake Forest resident Gilman Clark in 1992 and has resided here since.

Barbara was a long-time dental assistant and later a legal receptionist prior to moving to Lake Forest. One of few women who were HAM Radio operators in the 1950/1960 period, her soft southern voice ended Ham radio conversations with, “This is K4TKS signing off.” She was featured in a full-page article in the Newport News, Virginia Times Herald in April 1964 for her amateur radio involvement.

Dancing, singing and bowling were favorite activities. Following her move to Lake Forest, she and Gil attended countless amateur theater plays, music concerts and dance programs throughout the North Shore area for many years. Grace United Methodist Church worship, LB/LF Senior Center functions and American Legion activities were also parts of an active life.
