Derailment Continues To Cause Delays in Lake Bluff

Cleanup and repairs delay traffic after derailment of Union Pacific freight train loaded with molten sulfer.

LAKE BLUFF, IL — A day after nine cars carrying hazardous molten sulfur derailed in Lake Forest, railway repairs and testing have delayed east and westbound traffic on Rockland Road (Route 176) on Thursday, March 16.

The Village of Lake Bluff said it has been cooperating with Union Pacific to expedite repairs and return the railway to normal operation as quickly as possible.

While open to through traffic, the intersection near Route 176 and Highway 41 may be blocked for extended periods as rail traffic proceeds through the intersection at slow speeds. Travelers should find a different east-west route, if possible. Alternate routes include Deerpath Road, three miles south, or Buckley Road (Route 137,) three miles to the north, the Village said.

The Village said it expects testing to be complete later this afternoon. In the mean time, federal law requires passing trains to reduce their speed in the area of the repair.
