First, Last Babies Born At New, Old Lake Forest Hospitals

LAKE FOREST, IL — Layla Ayala, the final baby born at the old Lake Forest Hospital was delivered at 4:40 a.m. on Saturday, hours before the nursery was scheduled to move into the new building at 6 a.m. That meant Julizza Ayala of Waukegan was the last mom to give birth at the 6600 Westmoreland Rd. location before she and her 5 pound, 11 ounce baby girl were moved down connecting tunnels to the new building at 1000 Westmoreland Rd., where they were welcomed by staff around 8 a.m., according to Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital.

Later that afternoon, Jessica and Ryne Korbas entered the just-opened hospital ahead of the imminent arrival of their 9 pound, 10 ounce son. The Lake Villa couple showed up around 2:30 p.m., and new baby Brayden was born less than an hour later, becoming the first baby born in the new facility.

“When we walked in, we heard the staff say ‘OB stat’ on their iPhones so we knew this was going to happen quickly,” said Ryne Korbas, a Des Plaines police officer. “The staff was great, and we knew we were in good hands.”

A few days later, the hospital welcomed its first set of new twins, and it turned out their mother has a special connection to the hospital.

Kim and Scott Katich, of Grayslake, became the parents of identical twin daughters Addison and Charlie at 12:52 p.m. on March 6. Kim gave birth just few pavilions away from where her stepmom, surgical tech Michele Brancato, works, according to the hospital.
