Former Lake Forest Business Owner Dies

Veile lived in Lake Bluff and owned Market Square Pastries in Lake Forest.

Walter Franz Veile passed away on February 24, 2015 at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield, IL. Born on November 7, 1933 in Heidenheim Germany to Kaspar & Frida (Schwendemann) Veile, he learned the baking profession as an apprentice in his uncle’s bakery and later worked as a baker and pastry chef in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. He immigrated to the United States in 1957 and settled in the Chicago area working in several bakeries. He then served in the United States Army for 2 years. Upon returning from the Army, he opened Walter’s Bakery in North Chicago which he operated for several years before owning and operating Market Square Pastries in Lake Forest until he retired in 1994. He married the late Verena Lauener of Switzerland in 1971 and moved to Lake Bluff shortly thereafter. Walter is survived by children, Markus (Janel) of Springfield, IL and Sonja (Jeremy) Dwyer of Seattle, WA; grandchildren Ella, Leah, Abigail and Alexander; brothers Herbert (Maria) and Gerhart of Germany; as well as many nieces and nephews. Walter was an avid model train and stamp collector and was very active with the D.A.N.K. (German American National Congress) Lake County chapter. Walter was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Verena. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Walter F. A memorial service will be held at Wenban Funeral Home, 320 Vine Ave., Lake Forest on Friday, March 6th at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be private.
