Fort Sheridan Beach Cleanup Postponed Due To Storms

LAKE FOREST, IL — A cleanup day planned for Saturday morning at Fort Sheridan has been postponed as forecasters warn of storms, flooding concerns and dangerous conditions along Lake Michigan.

Organizers announced the delay ahead of the event, which had been hosted by Go Green Deerfield, Go Green Highland Park, and State Representative Bob Morgan.

“Thank you to everyone who expressed interest in joining our upcoming cleanup day. Due to anticipated storms beginning this evening and continuing into tomorrow, we will need to postpone the event to another weekend," organizers said.

The event was part of the broader Adopt-A-Beach cleanup movement, which aims to make beaches along all of the Great Lakes cleaner and reduce plastic pollution affecting the water.

The National Weather Service forecasted repeated downpours from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning. According to the forecast, a few of the storms “may approach severe limits.” The weather service also warned that repeated downpours could produce localized rainfall totals of more than two inches.

That rain could bring flooding to low-lying and poor draining areas, according to the weather service.

Along the lakefront, the weather service warned of a high swim risk through Monday morning for Lake Michigan beaches. Dangerous swimming conditions are expected, according to the forecast.

No new date for the Fort Sheridan cleanup was announced in the notice. Organizers said the event will be postponed to another weekend, with details on the rescheduled date expected later.
