George Halas Statue Revealed at Halas Hall

The iconic Chicago Bears coach/owner is remembered by a white bronze statue in Lake Forest.

For years, the Chicago Bears have honored their founder with the letters “GSH” on their players’ uniform sleeves. But now, there is something a little more concrete to honor the man who was the cornerstone of Chicago’s NFL franchise for decades.

The Bears on Sunday unveiled a 1,600-pound, 8’8” white bronze statue of George Stanley Halas outside Halas Hall, the team’s practice facility in Lake Forest.

According to ChicagoBears.com, the statue was created by sculptor Chad Fisher and features Halas with his right arm extended pointing his inex findger “presumably leading his team into battle.”

Among the Bears legends who played under Halas and attended Sunday’s ceremony were Dick Butkus, Gale Sayers, Ronnie Bull, Johnny Morris and Bob Wetoska.

“I’m not sure what the statue is made out of,” Butkus said, “but I do know this: Whatever it is it’s not as strong nor as tough as George Halas was in the flesh.”
