Groundwork Laid for Whole Foods to Open in Lake Forest

City is working to have grocer anchor planned development at Route 60 and Saunders Road.

A Whole Foods Market in Lake Forest remains a possibility four months after the upscale grocer decided not to pursue a location in the city.

A new development proposal, one that would take up an 8.5-acre site on the corner of Route 60 and Saunders Road at the Amberley Woods subdivision, is in the works with the idea of Whole Foods or another upscale grocery store serving as the anchor, according to the Lake Forester.

Whole Foods is also open to the idea of giving Lake Forest another chance even though they dropped plans to open there in January after city aldermen voiced concerns.

“We have been approached with a new alternative development that allows us to possibly serve the Lake Forest community,” Whole Foods spokeswoman Allison Phelps said, adding that it is too early in the process to provide more information.

Early plans call for the development to include a drive-through for a coffee shop or similar restaurant and smaller stores like a branch bank in addition to the 45,870 square-foot grocery store anchor.
