Horizon Pharma Acquires Lake Forest Drug Maker

LAKE FOREST, IL - Horizon Pharma, an Ireland-based specialty drugmaker, has acquired Lake Forest-based Crealta Holdings for $510 million in cash, Crain’s Chicago reports. The company announced in October it is moving its U.S. headquarters to Lake Forest.

The acquisition is expected to add $70 million to $80 million in net sales and at least $45 million in adjusted EBITDA in the first year after the deal closes.

“The Crealta acquisition further diversifies our portfolio of medicines and aligns with our focus of acquiring value-enhancing, clinically differentiated, long-life medicines that treat orphan diseases,” said Horizon CEO Timothy P. Walbert in a statement.

Lake Forest-based Crealta owns Krystexxa, the only FDA-approved medicine to treat refractory gout, an orphan disease and type of arthritis.

Horizon will move to a 133,000 square foot space at 150 S. Saunders Road. The company currently holds a space on Lake Cook Road in Deerfield that is less than half as big.
