Lake Bluff Obituary: Arthur Walker, 78

Walker served as a Lake Forest police officer and a chief investigator for the Lake County State's Attorney's Office.

Arthur Walker, 78, of Lake Bluff, died July 30, 2016. Arthur was born Sept. 1, 1937, at St. Therese Hospital, Waukegan, IL.

He attended Holy Family Church and School in North Chicago, as well as Waukegan and North Chicago high schools. Arthur served in the U.S. Army from 1957-60 and proceeded to marry, raise a family that included five children, and earn a BA in Criminal Justice from Carthage College in Kenosha, WI. He earned his degree while working full time as a police officer for the City of Lake Forest, where he served for nearly 10 and one-half years, leaving in March of 1975 to accept the then newly created position of chief investigator for the Lake County State's Attorney's Office.

His first duty, working for then-State's Attorney Jack Hoogaisian and funded by a federal grant, was to establish a complete criminal investigative unit. Within 30 short days, the unit was in place, and it remains in operation today. Walker often said that "the year and a half I worked for Jack Hoogaisian were the best years I ever worked. Jack was a great boss and a wonderful person to have as a friend."

Mr. Walker is preceded in death by his second wife, Nicki M. Walker (née Romcevich), in 2001; his father, Paul Walker, in 1944; his mother, Wanda Hanzel Walker, in 1970; and his two, locally famous dogs, Bing in 1976, and Butler in 1998. He is survived by his wife, Elena Walker; his three daughters, Maria Walker Robinson (Raymond), Kathryn Walker-Eich, Betsey Walker, as well as his two sons, Paul Walker (Pamela) and John Walker. Additionally, eight grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and cousins survive his passing.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 8, at Wenban Funeral Home, 320 Vine Ave., Lake Forest, IL. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Church of St. Mary, 175 E. Illinois Ave., Lake Forest, with burial at Lake Forest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society and/or Boys Town/Nebraska.
