Lake Bluff Police to Crackdown on Drunk Drivers

Increased patrol planned from now until Labor Day in Lake Bluff.

The Lake Bluff Police Department will crackdown on drunk driving from now through Labor Day as part of law enforcement’s partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Illinois Department of Transportation in The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

A recent Daily North Shore article provided data that showed more than 10,000 people killed in the country in 2013 to drunk driving crashes. That year, 38 percent of crash fatalities on Labor Day involved drunk drivers.

“Too many people think their actions don’t affect anybody else,” said Lake Bluff Police Chief David Belmonte. “They know it’s illegal. They know it’s wrong. But they do it anyway – they make decisions as if those statistics just can’t happen to them.”

The enforcement period this year (August 24 to September 7) will include more patrol vehicles and increased messaging about possible drunk drivers.

“The number of people who are still drinking and driving is unacceptable,” Belmonte said.
