Langdon Alger, a junior at Beacon Academy in Evanston, has been named a 2018 National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts) Merit winner in Cinematic Arts. Selected from the most competitive pool of applicants to date, Alger has been recognized for his outstanding artistic achievements and joins 757 of the nation’s most promising young artists from 47 states across the literary, visual, design, and performing arts
“This extraordinary group of young artists represents the vibrancy of our culture for years to come, and we look forward to supporting and encouraging them at key junctures in their careers,” said Carolina García Jayaram, YoungArts President and CEO. “I applaud all of our extraordinary panelists in making this year’s selection, one of the most competitive in YoungArts’ history.”
Selected through a blind adjudication process conducted by an independent panel of highly accomplished artists, the 2018 YoungArts winners represent the top 10 percent of applicants.

Alger’s award includes eligibility for a cash prize of $10,000 and the opportunity to participate in YoungArts’ regional program in New York where he will have access to renowned mentors, such as Academy Award-winning director, producer, editor, writer, and cinematographer Doug Blush and award-winning visual artist Teresita Fernández. Alger will also be offered opportunities to share his work publicly at institutions such as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

I’ve been to many schools, and none of them has supported my endeavors in film as much as my current school, Beacon Academy. I’m truly lucky to be a student at Beacon knowing that they will always encourage and incorporate my filmmaking into my everyday life,” said Alger.

Beacon Academy, an independent high school based in Montessori principles and culminating in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, offers a robust arts program intended not only to facilitate artistic expression but also to allow students the freedom for personal expression.
