Lake Forest Civic Orchestra Opens 27th Season with "Passages" on Oct. 1st

The Lake Forest Civic Orchestra opens its 27th season with the concert "Passages" on Oct 1, 2017 at 4pm at the Gorton Community Center!

The Lake Forest Civic Orchestra is proud to announce the opening of its 27th Season with its first performance on October 1, 2017 at 4:00pm. The concert, entitled “Passages,” features Elgar’s Sea Pictures and Brahms’ Serenade No. 1, Op. 11. The orchestra introduces Kim Diehnelt, Music Director for the Northwest Symphony Orchestra, as Guest Conductor. The performance will be held in the John & Nancy Hughes Theater at the Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest, IL (400 E. Illinois Road).

Edward Elgar composed Sea Pictures during the summer of 1899 for orchestra and contralto, and the piece, as a song cycle, sets the texts of five Victorian poets who illustrated the power and beauty of the sea in their poetry. Movements include: I. Sea Slumber Song (Roden Noel); II. In Haven (Capri) (C. Alice Elgar); III. Sabbath Morning at Sea (Elizabeth Barrett Browning); IV. Where Corals Lie (Dr. Richard Garnett); and V. The Swimmer (Adam Lindsay Gordon). The orchestra is excited to have mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Hale Knox as soloist for Sea Pictures. Ms. Knox is a renowned vocalist who has performed locally with Chicago’s Lyric Opera Chorus, Grant Park Symphony Chorus, and Music of the Baroque as well as nationally with the Chattanooga Opera, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Evansville Symphony Orchestra, among many other ensembles. She has also appeared on PBS on the Emmy-nominated program A Renaissance Christmas.

Mark your calendars for the rest of Lake Forest Civic Orchestra’s season with Music Director Robert Nordling! The orchestra will present “Vive La France” on Sunday, November 12, 2017; “Slava! Russian Favorites” on Sunday, March 11, 2018; and “Sisters Unite” Celebrates Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 13, 2018. All concerts will take place at 4:00pm at the John & Nancy Hughes Theater at the Gorton Community Center (400 E. Illinois Rd., Lake Forest, IL 60045).
