Lake Forest Crime: Repeat Shoplifter Snatched Rogaine, DUI Driver Crashes and Passes Out At LFC, Police Say

LAKE FOREST, IL — The following information comes from the Lake Forest Police Department. It is a record of police activity. Arrests are not an indication of guilt and criminal charges can be dropped or reduced. All defendants are innocent until their guilt is established by a court.

CHRONIC THEFT

On Feb. 24 at 9:00 p.m. police were called to the Jewel Grocery at 890 North Western Avenue after employees spotted a man who they said they'd seen shoplifting the night before.

Staff recognized Mark Goodwin, 45, of the 600 block of Linda in Lynwood, as the man who had stolen $520 worth of Rogaine, Crest whitening strips and Oil of Olay the previous night, according to Commander Craig Lepkowski of the Lake Forest Police Department. When they saw him again on Jewel security cameras collecting hundreds of dollars worth of items from the store and putting them in his cart, employees called police. He left the store when police arrived, and although he as not found with any stolen items on him, he was taken to the station where an investigation determined he had six previous shoplifting convictions and charged with several offenses, including retail theft with previous convictions, a class 4 felony.

On Feb. 22 at 9:10 p.m., poliec patroling the area north of Deerpath and Waukegan Road saw a grey Toyota violate a series of traffic laws. They stopped the car and spoke with the driver, identified as a 22-year-old Waukegan woman and noticed a smell of alcohol on her breath and her speaking was slow and slurred. They conducted sobriety tests and arrested her for driving under the influence of alcohol.

On Feb. 21 at 12:43 a.m. police stopped a blue Mazda around Deerpath and McKinley after seeing a traffic violation. Officers smelled marijuana coming from the car, detained its two occupants, both boys from Lake Forest, and found some marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Both were taken to the station and turned over to parents or guardians and given citations.

On Feb. 17, at 4:06 a.m. police were called to Lake Forest College after LFC security located a vehicle with heavy body damage and a flat tire, in a parking lot and a female driver passed out in the driver’s seat. Police began speaking with the driver, identified as a 19-year-old woman of the 0-100 block of Melbourne Court in Lake In the Hills, and they determined based on their observations that she had been drinking. Police had her perform several standardized field sobriety test and based on her performance she was arrested.

VIOLATION OF ORDER OF PROTECTION

On Feb. 26 around 2:30 p.m., LFPD responded to Lake Forest Academy on a report that a violation of an order of protection had occurred between two students. After speaking with both parties and verifying the active order of protection was in effect. Police spoke with the 18-year-old Appleton, Wisconsin man against whom the order had been established and detained him at the station. After consulting with county prosecutors, the man was charged with the violation and taken to jail.
