Lake Forest Obituary: Armiger H. "Joe" Sommers

Armiger H. “Joe” Sommers of Lake Forest Place, in Lake Forest, IL, died peacefully and with trust in Jesus on May 23, 2015 at the age of 94. He was born on June 15, 1920 to John and Marguerite (Jagoe) Sommers in Clarksdale, Mississippi, the youngest of three children. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Catherine Lenore nee Olson and by their five children and spouses: John L. (Michiko) Sommers, Richard L. (Elaine) Sommers, Robert A. (Ruth) Sommers, Mary C. (Lindley) Specht and Elizabeth A. (Michael) Pierret. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Michael Sommers, Christopher Sommers, Karen (Mike) Koffler, David and Peter Sommers, Katherine (Scott) Allen and Theresa Pierret. Armiger received his Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate degrees in Organic Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame. He did chemical research during World War II on anti-malarial agents at Notre Dame and Columbia University. He worked at Abbott Laboratories for thirty-seven years. At Abbott he met Lenore, a chemical engineering graduate of the University of Michigan. They were married on September 10, 1949 at St. Patrick’s Church in Escanaba, Michigan. He was a gardener, active in the Church of St. Mary and in the American Cancer Society. Visitation 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Wenban Funeral Home, 320 Vine Ave., Lake Forest, IL. Funeral Mass, 10:00 am Friday, May 29, at Church of St. Mary, 175 E. Illinois Road, Lake Forest. Interment St. Mary Cemetery, Lake Forest.
