Lake Forest Obituary: Francis Callaghan, 87

Francis Callaghan, formerly of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff, passed away on August 21 at the age of 87. The youngest of 11 children, Frank was born in County Mayo, Ireland. He came to the United States at the age of 21. He became a United States citizen in 1954, after being drafted into the Army and serving two years in Japan during the Korean conflict. Frank worked for many years as a mortgage banker. Frank contributed enthusiastically to civic organizations throughout his life. He was an officer of Toastmasters International and was a member of the Rotary Club and the American Legion. From 1984 until 1991 Frank was a member of the Lake Forest Plan Commission and the Building Review Board. He was a devoted parishioner of the Church of St. Mary where he served on the Parish Council and where he was active with the Knights of Columbus. He was the head usher at the 10:30 mass for many years.
Frank was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Adele. He leaves behind five children, Karen (Arly Guenther), Janet, John (Julie), William and Kathy (Jeremy); and six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Frank will be remembered for his good nature, love of literature and poetry, and for his generous community service. A private funeral mass will be held for the family at the Church of St. Mary, Lake Forest. Burial Private.
