LFCDS Social Studies Class Makes History Come Alive with Unique Project

Lake Forest Country Day School Students Study the Crusades Using Google Earth Technology

Last week, Lake Forest Country Day School students completed a project for the ages about events that occurred ages ago. Upper School History teacher Ben Haight designed a project that called for students to pick one of the many Crusades waged for the control of Jerusalem, and to use Google Earth to track the extensive journey that these armies took en route to the Holy Land.

With their sharp display monitors, the new macs in the recently furnished computer lab allowed students to bring these ancient crusades to life on a large projector. From France to Jerusalem, the Google Earth interactive map displays beautifully outlined these massive excursions, not only giving students a unique visual perspective into these wars, but also a bridge from the past to the present.

According to Mr. Haight, “This project combines hands-on learning and integrated technology with the LFCDS emphasis on raising cultural awareness in the hopes of developing global citizens. The geography involved in this project promotes kids learning about the world around them.”
