Mary Driver-Thiel lives in Lake Forest, Illinois. She holds a B.A. in Fine Arts and a Master of Arts in Teaching. She is the author of the novel, The World Undone, which was short-listed for 2013 Book of the Year by Chicago Writers’ Association. Her short stories have been published in various print and online magazines, including Epiphany, Halfway Down the Stairs, and Midwest Prairie Review.

Anne Bennett presents herself as living a charmed life. Her husband, Henry, heads a powerful Connecticut investment firm, and her elegant home is featured in magazines dedicated to luxury lifestyles. Their only child, a grown daughter named Sylvia, lives in northern Michigan, and the distance suits Anne. As a teenager, Anne was forced to give up another child and the loss profoundly scarred her, making it impossible for her to parent Sylvia.

When Henry dies unexpectedly, the facade of Anne’s perfect life disappears. His firm is under federal investigation. All assets are seized, and Anne has nothing but a purse full of cash, her sense of entitlement, and her car. Though at first she travels to Chicago to hide at the home of her estranged sister, Anne soon aims for Michigan, where both daughters live, to face the costs of her mistakes.
