Mary Jane Guth, 94, longtime resident of Lake Forest

Mary Jane Guth (nee Wolf), 94, passed peacefully after a long life of strength, enthusiasm, and optimism. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, to Frank and Mamie (nee Wondriska) Wolf, she brought joy to their lives playing the piano and tennis and being named Queen of her Job’s Daughters chapter. Mary Jane graduated from Cleveland High School (St. Louis) in 1946 and Harris Teachers College (St. Louis) in 1950, taught elementary school and married John E. Guth, Jr. (Jack) in 1951.

When her husband’s career with IBM moved the family four times (the last in the late 1960s from New Canaan, Connecticut to Lake Forest, Illinois), she was the cohesive force creatively establishing new households and getting involved in local organizations. She and her husband became paddle tennis enthusiasts in the late 1960s and were instrumental in bringing the American Platform Tennis Association (APTA) national championships to Lake Forest.

Mary Jane was a competitive tennis and paddle tennis player at Onwentsia Club, volunteered for over 25 years at Lake Forest Hospital and thoroughly enjoyed the annual Know Your Chicago program. She cherished the friends she made in these activities and was a great “dog Mom” to several West Highland White terriers.

She was predeceased by her parents, sister Carolyn Auer and husband Jack and is survived by her son James (John Murrow) and daughter Patricia (Arthur Frame, Jr.) and her grandsons Arthur Frame III and John Frame.
