Megabus Fire Still Under Investigation

Driver "risked his own life" to save luggage, passengers claim.

LAKE FOREST, IL - Investigators are still trying to find the cause of a fire that erupted on a Chicago-to-Minneapolis Megabus in Lake Forest Sunday. There were 40 passengers on the bus, but none were injured. All had been evacuated prior to arrival from the fire department.

Several told the Chicago Tribune they heard a loud “pop” and saw smoke coming from a tire. “Fire came from everywhere,” passenger Russicha Watkins said. “(The driver) was trying to risk his own life to throw our luggage out, but he couldn’t because the smoke was too dangerous.”

Fire units from Lake Forest, Lake Bluff and Knollwood responded to the blaze, which occurred on Route 41 near Gage Lane, not far from Lake Forest Hospital.
