Memorial Day 2018: What's Open, Closed In Lake Forest, Lake Bluff

LAKE FOREST, IL — Memorial Day weekend combines the unofficial kickoff to summer with a chance to honor those veterans of the armed forces, including those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service of the United States. Since the tradition began 150 years ago to commemorate those who died in the Civil War, the federal holiday has evolved into a time for cookouts, parades and weekend getaways.
Here's what's open, closed and going on in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff on Memorial Day 2018:
Lake Bluff Memorial Day Observance
The village will mark Memorial Day at Village Green at 9 a.m., with music from the Lake Forest High School band set to begin at 8:45.

Lake Forest Memorial Day Observance
American Legion McKinlock Post 264 is hosting an event to remember and honor our fallen U.S. service members for Lake Forest's annual Memorial Day at Market Square. The special guest speaker this year is Commander Omar Martinez from Naval Station Great Lakes, and the LFHS concert band will again perform patriotic music to accompany the ceremony.

Government Buildings
- The Lake Forest and Lake Bluff public libraries will be closed Sunday and Monday.
- Non-essential public employees will have the day off.
- Postal service will not be available.
Transportation
- Metra will begin offering free rides to children through Labor Day.
- CTA will run on a weekend schedule.
Business
- Most supermarkets will be open, though some, like Costco, give their employees the day off.
- Many retailers offer special Memorial Day sales and deals for veterans.
Services
- No residential refuse or recycling collection will take place Monday.
- In Lake Forest: Monday pickups will occur on Tuesday and Tuesday pickups on Wednesday, while Thursday and Friday schedules will remain the same.
- In Lake Bluff: All pickups will take place one day later than normal.
