MLK Day 2018: What's Open, What's Closed In Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, IL — Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be marked Monday across the country. It's the 32nd year a federal holiday honoring the slain civil rights leader has been observed.
While many in Chicagoland will still have have to work, most schools and government offices will take a break. Plus, many community events are being held to mark the occasion.
Here’s what you can expect to find open and closed in Lake Forest on Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

- Schools: Schools will be closed.
- Public Library: The Lake Forest library will remain open Jan. 15, while the Lake Bluff Public Library will be closed.
- Banks: Most bank branches will be closed.
- Government: Most government offices will be closed. At the Lake County clerk's office, vital records will remain open but election, tax redemption and voter services departments will all be closed.
- U.S. Postal Service: Post offices will be closed and there will be no mail delivery.
- Garbage Pickup: Refuse collection will not be affected by the holiday.

Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Program at Lake Forest College
Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel, Middle Campus
Each year, the LFC Office of Intercultural Relations presents a program celebrating Dr. King’s life and legacy. This year’s program will focus on Dr. King’s legacy of action with the hope that our community will be motivated to serve and make a difference in the lives of those around us. Our speaker for this year is Vernon A. Wall, a consultant for One Better World, Co-Founder Faculty for Social Justice Training Institute, Executive Producer of Capital Pride, and Board Member at Capital Pride Alliance.
Bernie’s Book Bank
There are 18 weekly opportunities for volunteers at Bernie's Book Bank, 28101 N. Ballard Dr. Community groups, individuals and families can help sort, sticker and pack quality books for at-risk children. Find out more and sign up online.
2nd Annual Lake County Cares Martin Luther King Day of Service Event
Lake County Cares is hosting its 2nd Annual MLK Day of Service 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest. All ages are welcome to come out and meet local nonprofit groups doing great work in our community. Participate in on-site volunteer projects and enjoy live music and refreshments.
Admission is free, but please bring one or more of the following items to donate:
- nonperishable food items
- diapers (especially sizes 5 and 6)
- clothing and accessories suitable for someone looking for employment (business and business casual)
