PRESS RELEASE: LFHS Named Lake County’s No. 1 Public High School by Chicago Magazine for Second Time
Lake Forest Community High School has been named as No. 1 public high school in Lake County by Chicago Magazine for the second time running.

Lake Forest, IL— Lake Forest Community High School (LFHS) has been named the No. 1 public high school in Lake County by Chicago Magazine for the second time running. The recognition appears in the magazine’s September 2026 issue, which ranks public high schools across the Chicago area based on student achievement and school performance measures.
Chicago Magazine based its 2026 rankings on 2024–25 performance data from the Illinois State Board of Education, including measures of ACT proficiency and growth, consistent attendance, and four-year graduation rates.

LFHS ranked first among the Lake County schools included in the rankings, with an 86% ACT ELA proficiency rate, 78% ACT math proficiency rate, 91% consistent attendance rate, and 96% four-year graduation rate.

“The strength of our school is reflected in much more than any single measure,” said Superintendent Matthew L. Montgomery, Ph.D. “This recognition is a testament to the shared commitment of our teachers, staff, students, and families to creating opportunities for students to thrive. We are proud to see that commitment recognized at the county level.”

Assistant Superintendent and LFHS Principal Dr. Erin Lenart said the recognition underscores the Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, and Knollwood communities' commitment to student growth and success. “Our students bring tremendous curiosity, talent, and grit to our classrooms every day,” Lenart said. “Our students are encouraged to explore their interests, pursue their goals, and contribute to our school and broader community. This recognition celebrates the hard work of our students and the educators who support them along the way.”
