Watch Cubs Fan With Down Syndrome Sing National Anthem At Wrigley

Stefan Xidas' dream came true Monday night: he belted out "The Star-Spangled Banner" in front of thousands of fans at Wrigley Field.

CHICAGO — A Special Olympics athlete's lifelong dream of singing the national anthem at Wrigley Field has come true: Stefan Xidas stood proudly in front of thousands of fellow fans and belted out the anthem before Monday's game against the Brewers.

Xidas has raised more than $19,000 on GoFundMe for the Special Olympics as part of his dream of singing the anthem, after he proposed the fundraiser to Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts. The Cubs matched Xidas' donation, so his campaign raised more than $37,000.

Xidas, a New Trier High School graduate, said he's been a Cubs fan for "as long as he can remember."

Xidas is no stranger to singing in front of crowds — he sang the national anthem at a White Sox game in 2005, and sang again at the Nielsen/USTA tennis tournament in Winnetka in 2012.

On his GoFundMe page, Xidas explained that Special Olympics is Illinois' largest sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities. He said all funds raised will go to the equipment, attire and health supplies that "can help transform an athlete's life."
