Exelon Employee Volunteers Support Clothing Resale with Center on Halsted to Benefit Local Elementary School
Employee volunteers from Exelon partnered with Center on Halsted on Tuesday, April 8, to sort, organize and fold donated clothing for resale and identify unusable items for recycling as part of Exelon’s celebration of National Volunteer Week.
Proceeds from the clothing sale will benefit Center on Halsted and local elementary school Nettelhorst (3252 N. Broadway St.), which will use the funds to purchase new uniforms for its athletic teams. Center on Halsted is the Midwest's most comprehensive community center dedicated to advancing and securing the health and well-being of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community.
“Exelon shares Center on Halsted’s commitment to creating inclusive environments that support and empower individuals of diverse backgrounds, including LGBTQ people,” said project sponsor Duane DesParte, senior vice president and corporate controller, Exelon. “Diversity and inclusion are fundamental to us, and our employees are proud to work with community organizations that advance these values during National Volunteer Week and year-round.”

The event was one of more than 150 community service projects Exelon employee volunteers are leading in celebration of National Volunteer Week (April 6-12), an annual, nationwide observance of people working to improve their communities through volunteer service. More than 1,000 Exelon employees, family members and friends are expected to provide approximately 4,000 hours of volunteer service for the projects, which take place in Exelon’s service territories of northern Illinois, central Maryland, southeastern Pennsylvania and Texas.
“Our employees look forward to National Volunteer Week as an opportunity to better the quality of life in the communities they serve,” said Exelon President and CEO Chris Crane, “and their passion for serving does not end there. All year long, our dedicated employees donate their time and energy to the causes and organizations that matter to them to help create a brighter, more sustainable future where our communities thrive.”

For the eighth consecutive year, Exelon recognized National Volunteer Week by empowering employee volunteers to design their own service projects and recruit others to participate. Exelon’s projects focus on education, environmental issues, diversity and inclusion, and community enrichment.
In 2013, more than 3,800 Exelon employee volunteers gave almost 88,000 hours of their time to community nonprofit organizations. This is equivalent to more than 2,200 workweeks or over 42 years of fulltime service.
