Hospital Earns Ninth ENERGY STAR Certification

Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center outperforms similar U.S. buildings on measure of energy efficiency.

Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR® certification for superior energy performance. This is the 9th year that the hospital has earned the ENERGY STAR, reflecting a legacy of continued energy savings.

“Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center continues to demonstrate true environmental leadership by reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions that are proven to contribute to climate change,” stated Jean Lupinacci, ENERGY STAR Director for Commercial & Industrial Buildings. “Today, 45 percent of U.S. emissions are attributable to commercial and industrial buildings, which is why improving energy efficiency is so critical for our future.”

ENERGY STAR-certified buildings and plants are verified to perform in the top 25 percent of buildings nationwide, based on weather-normalized source energy use that takes into account occupancy, hours of operation, and other key metrics. ENERGY STAR is the only energy efficiency certification in the United States that is based on actual, verified energy performance.

“We’re so honored to earn the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center,” said Susan Nordstrom Lopez, President. “Our mission is to provide the highest quality care for our community, and that includes maintaining our facilities well and being good, responsible stewards of our resources. Saving energy is truly a team effort, and we are fortunate to have so many here committed to making both Advocate Illinois Masonic, the community and the world a better place for future generations.”

Nordstrom Lopez credits this success to years of persistent preventative maintenance and a steady flow of operational and capital improvement projects, which have really set them apart from other hospitals around the country that are much newer than the 110-year-old ever-growing medical campus.
