In partnership with JP Guyer of Yogi Cop, Las Vegas, local yoga teacher, Liz Vitell, will host an innovative workshop specially designed for first responders. The comprehensive class, open to police officers, fire fighters, medical personnel and their life-partners, covers the physical, emotional and mental effects of stress. Participants will learn how to combat stress-using yoga, breathing techniques, meditation and nutrition.
Numerous studies show that ongoing stress has detrimental and cumulative effects on the physical body and the mind. Constant exposure to stressful events can lead to Continuous Traumatic Stress Disorder or CTSD. Modalities like yoga, breath work and meditation can counteract the impact of stress and promote relaxation and peace of mind and increase one’s sense of well-being. At the same time, these practices facilitate the ability of first responders to perform their duties from an optimal place of balance, perspective and presence, increasing job performance and satisfaction.

Las Vegas Police Department Detective Guyer, who credits the yogic lifestyle for the balance he now enjoys in his own life, brings his particular experience and expertise to the program. Liz Vitell’s background as a prosecutor and former chief of the Illinois Attorney General’s Crime Victims Compensation Bureau provides an additional perspective to addressing the issues that confront emergency responders. Both teachers have wide-ranging yoga training and experience teaching different populations. Guyer and Vitell plan to use this initial workshop as a template on which to build a national non-profit training foundation that will bring the program at little or no cost to agencies that lack the budget to pay.
“Rescuers Reset” happens on May 23, 2015 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Tribe Healing Arts, 1819-21 W. Belmont Ave. Chicago, IL 60657. The cost of $75 includes lunch. An early bird special is available for $65 for participants who enroll on or before March 15, 2015.
