Marianos (Grocery Store) is only in Chicago and is expanding rapidly with plans to open 8 more Chicago area stores in the next year.
While they have sexual orientation as a protected class in their handbook they have a dirty little secret.
They are hiding behind a technicality to discriminate against members of the  LGBT community in a Civil Union.Â
Even though ALL of their business is in Illinois their insurance policy is issued in Wisconsin... where their parent company, Roundy's, is located. Because of this loophole they are allowed to not offer insurance to spouses of it's LGBT employees.Â
When asked if they would extend benefits to LGBT spouses they replied "Absolutely not".Â
While they may be technically correct they are morally and ethically wrong. They are currently working on opening a store in the boystown neighborhood. That would provide for an excellent opportunity to out their discriminatory practices.
It's one thing to say you don't discriminate against the LGBT community, sadly, it's another to actually practice it.Â
