Hospice and palliative care is more than just pain medication. Touch has been shown to reduce signs and symptoms of a person’s illness. Studies show that touch reduces pain and blood pressure, especially following strokes. A study evaluating the effectiveness of massage found significant decreases in Parkinson’s tremors.Massage therapy also decreased pacing, wandering, and combative behavior, symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease. A 2012 study in Supportive Care in Cancer showed that cancer patients, after being given a massage by their caregivers, reported reductions in pain, stress, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, and depression.

Learn how compassionate touch and massage therapy are being integrated into hospice and palliative care and how such techniques are benefiting those receiving such care.
