Ready for the Wrigley Bowl? Cubs Jockey for Annual College Football Game at Friendly Confines

The club also wants to host some of Northwestern's Big Ten games at the ballpark, beginning in 2020.

CHICAGO, IL — Thanks to the success of the Pinstripe Bowl at New York's Yankee Stadium, the Chicago Cubs are working to bring an annual college football bowl game to Wrigley Field. But first, officials want to bring back regular season games to the Friendly Confines in 2020, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Cubs President Crane Kenney says the organization will begin to focus on trying to host some of Northwestern University's Big Ten games beginning in November 2020, the report stated. A run at capturing a yearly bowl game will come after that, the report added.

But a few things have to happen before college football can become a reality on the North Side. The biggest change: Wrigley Field will need to be expanded to accommodate two full end zones, the Tribune reports. When Northwestern played the University of Illinois at Wrigley in 2010, both teams used the same end zone for safety reasons.

Then there are the organizational matters that come with creating a new bowl game. Conferences, broadcasters and name sponsors need to sign on, the report stated. Plus, the bowl needs to be sanctioned by the NCAA, and there's a moratorium on discussing new events until 2019, the report added.
