School Bus Catches Fire in Front of Museum of Science and Industry
Driver was able to evacuate the children safely in front of the museum.
A school bus on its way to drop off some children for a field trip at the Museum of Science and Industry caught fire Wednesday morning.
Lisa Miner, director of public relations for the museum, said the driver of the school bus smelled smoke as she was driving on Lake Shore Drive around 10:45 a.m. She turned on to 57th Street in front of the Museum of Science and Industry, 5700 S. Lake Shore Drive.
When she started to see smoke, the driver was able to quickly and safely evacuate the students. Another school bus arrived to ferry the children to the museum’s rear entrance.
As the children were being driven away, the school bus caught on fire.
“The Chicago Fire Department came and immediately struck out the fire,” Miner said. “Everyone is safe and the kids are at the museum right now.”
There were no injuries to students, the driver or firefighters. Miner did not know school or bus company name.
