The Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer’s Disease Center of Feinberg Medical School at Northwestern University has begun a project aimed at defining and characterizing why some individuals age better than others. Our ongoing study is focused on individuals who are 80 years and older. Our presentation will describe what criteria we are using to define “SuperAgers.” We will review our findings regarding unique brain features, genetic factors, cellular qualities and personality that we have discovered thus far that separate the SuperAgers in our sample from their peers. Finally, we will outline where we plan to go with our study and why we think it is an important contribution to understanding how we can increase the percentage of individuals who experience better than average aging.
