Girl Group Chicago makes its debut at Chicago’s “Best Street Fest” (Chicago Magazine), Wicker Park Fest.
Girl Group Chicago, the 2013 recipients of two Chicago Music Awards for "Best New Entertainer" and "Pop Entertainer of the Year," is an all-female music phenomenon that was founded by Shana East in March 2012. Since their first public appearance at Schubas in December 2012, audiences and critics have praised every aspect of the group’s performances as they “don’t so much work the stage as commandeer it—even when they’re just doing a simple sway-and-swim routine behind soulful renditions of ‘You Don’t Own Me’ or ‘Last Minute Miracle’ (Chicago Reader).”
Featuring 20 of Chicago’s most talented female artists, with its performers often playing in other established Chicago bands, Girl Group Chicago takes the stage looking like a demure 1960s-era girl band with beehived hair and lips painted and then unleashes a powerful wall of sound performance with a mixture of 1960s aesthetic and feel, reclaiming songs as its own with a 21st century edge and a distinctive Girl Group sound. The Chicago Reader’s Music Editor Philip Montoro said, “I'm sorry about every time I didn't see them over the past year and a half... They strike the perfect balance between winking at the dated material and having a huge, contagious amount of fun with it… I'm in love.”
"I really wanted to do something that defies stereotype and shows people the power of so many creative women. Girl Group has created an environment for women to have fun and be creative – like a social club where we happen to play music together. And the response to this concept, from women and men, has been amazing. It is quite a rush to witness the audience actually being overwhelmed by what is happening on stage and by what they are hearing," said East.
Girl Group Chicago’s members include: Kelly Argyle (The Afflictions), tenor sax; Monica Boubou (Bobby Conn), violin; Katie Braun (Automatic Lovers), aux percussion; Renee DeFour (Stationary(Heart)Records), cello; Leslie Deckard (Bare Mutants), alto sax; Shana East (DEVOid, The Unwild), lead vocals; Lise Gilly (Bobby Conn, Cheer Accident, Grupo Cha Cha), alto sax; Sara Heymann (Chlamydia Nightmare), vocals; Jill Hopkins (Cooler by the Lake), aux percussion; Billie Howard (The Paver), keyboard/piano; Susie Inverso (Mucca Pazza), trumpet; Megan Kasten (Hollows), lead guitar; Claire Keating, vocals; Elanor Leskiw (Mucca Pazza), trombone; Andrea “Whack Minx” Jablonski (Rabid Rabbit, Camaro Rouge, The Unnamed), bass; Mia Park (Kim, The Baltimores, Panda Panda), aux percussion; Stephanie Rohr (actress, Godspell, Jesus Camp: The Musical), vocals; Carrie Shemanski (Mr. Mayor and the Highballers), rhythm guitar; Kate Walsh (Glass Bricks, Death Ships, Speck Mountain), tenor sax and Stephanie Whiton (Rebecca Rego, The Logic of Elliott), drums.
