Even though politicians have been fighting about the state budget for weeks, everyday Illinoisans end up bearing the brunt of the shutdown.

State government has more hands in an average Illinoisan’s life than he or she might realize, and a shutdown of that state government could mean more disruptions to everyday life in the state than most people could anticipate.

As Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic legislative leaders House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton continue their budget wrangling, no one knows how long the state will go without a functioning budget and for how long services such as state museums and the Secretary of State’s office could go unfunded.
