D’Arcy McNickle Distinguished Lecture Series: John Evans and the Question of Genocide
November 4, 5:30 pm reception, 6 pm lecture
John Evans and the Question of Genocide is the first in a new series of public lectures at the Newberry by distinguished scholars working in the interdisciplinary field of American Indian and Indigenous Studies. Evans, one of the founders of Northwestern University, was recently implicated for his involvement in the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 while he served as governor of what was then the territory of Colorado. While an investigative committee absolved Evans of any direct involvement, his failure to condemn the event highlights the many degrees of responsibility inherent in acts of violence. Dr. Ned Blackhawk, an award-winning scholar and Professor of History and American Studies at Yale University, will examine critical intersections between the massacre and recent inquiries into local history.
